Aspiration

Anchors Vision & Guides Growth in Design

Aspiration often arises when we see the potential for greater impact, deeper meaning, or long-term change. It shows up as hope, motivation, or the desire to grow. In the design process, aspiration helps us stretch beyond the immediate task, rooting our work in what could be possible from how things are currently.

While it can be energizing, aspiration can also bring tension. Sometimes the distance between the present and the possible feels overwhelming. But naming our aspirations helps bring clarity, align priorities, and fuel momentum toward a shared future.

Throughout the design journey,
Aspiration might show up in different ways:

Yellow and orange puzzle pieces with the word "ALIGN" in white text in the center.

Alignment conversations reveal hopes for transformation.

Community insights surface long-term needs or dreams that help shape the bigger picture.

A teal-colored graphic with a starburst shape and a circle in the center, containing the word 'SHARE' in white capital letters.

Design recommendations spark conversations about scale, longevity, or systems change.

A light blue hand graphic with the word 'SUPPORT' in bold white letters over it, set against a purple background with a hexagon shape.

Implementation planning prompts deeper reflection on sustainability, ownership, and future possibilities.

If you are feeling Aspirational, consider:

Naming your Vision

Articulate the change you're working toward, who it’s for, and why it matters in the broader context.

Mapping Next Steps

Identify what’s feasible now, what needs more time, and what could evolve as the process unfolds.

Building Alignment

Clarify who shares this aspiration and how you’ll move in that direction together.

An Example from our Work

Aspiration shapes how we grow

A client envisioned scaling our design labs globally while preserving its transformative impact. This aspiration drove us to distill the core principles that made our labs powerful and reimagine how they could flourish in diverse contexts. We built thoughtful partnerships and adaptive processes uniquely suited to each location, ensuring the work remained deeply connected to local communities.

The result was intentional expansion across multiple countries—not simply replicating our model, but allowing it to evolve and strengthen through cultural adaptation. Aspiration didn't just open doors to scale; it inspired us to scale with purpose and integrity, creating a network of labs that share common values while honoring local wisdom and needs.

Pause & Reflect

What’s pulling me toward the future?

Where do my hopes feel aligned—or misaligned—with our current direction?

What support or structure could help move this forward?
